Sobre Maria

Carmélia Maria Nato Lopes was born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in Mozambique, on 4 March 1945. She was raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, and in 1964 started singing professionally at venues such as Archies nightclub and the Lourenço Marques restaurant, both in Hillbrow, as well as at the Top of the Carlton. She was discovered by Dickie Loader when she sang backing vocals on one of his singles. She subsequently had 4 South African Top 20 hits, with “Clap Your Hands, Stamp Your Feet” going to number 1 in 1973, and charting for 19 weeks. She won a SARIE award for Top 20 Artist of the Year in 1974. Maria passed away in 1980.

The song below – Right or Wrong- was released in South Africa on 7″ single in 1968, and was also released on the album “This Is Maria”, also in 1968. It’s a cover of a Wanda Jackson song from 1961.
